    Is it possible to put a border around, or somehow highlight the current day in the widgets calendar display?

    Yes, it should add the class today to the current day, you can use this in your theme to highlight it, if your theme doesn’t already:

     .eo_widget_calendar .today{
          background: #ffffe0;
    }
